PSI Group releases eGovernment study of Massachusetts

The Public Sphere Information Group (PSI Group) has completed a broad study of electronic government implementation across the municipalities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts study is the latest release from the Municipality eGovernment Assessment Project (MeGAP) designed and conducted by the PSI Group, which assesses the degree of implementation of services by cities across 55 different functions and services typically provided by municipalities. The study area includes all 351 cities and towns that make up the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Overall findings of the study:

  1. Consistent with national trends, the larger municipalities are at or near the national leading edge of egovernment implementation. Boston is currently ranked near the top among all US cities of any size.
  2. There is a huge disparity across municipalities in terms of the quality of online services. This disparity is based to a large extent on size. The average regional eScore for all cities and towns in Massachusetts is 12.6. Among regional cities with populations under 10,000, that average drops to 5.5.
  3. Geographic distribution tells a tale. Implementation by urban and suburban municipalities outpaces that of rural areas.
